Frank Tenney Johnson was born near Big Grove, Iowa, in 1874. At an early age, Johnson ran away from home and worked as an apprentice to the Artist, F.W. Heine. Johnson made his way to New York in 1895, where he studied at the Art Student's League. Following a period of time when Johnson worked out west as a cowboy, he returned to New York, where his paintings earned him national acclaim as a painter of Western life.
